Well I guess summer’s over–I had my first Terrifying Downpour Driving Experience of the season…it started raining at about Olympia, and by the time I was about 45 miles from Portland, the rain was coming down in buckets, there were flowing sheets of water across the freeway, the spray from other vehicles was everywhere, and I could see Nothing. Oh yeah, I thought. I remember this.
Fortunately it only lasted twenty miles or so (i.e. nearly half an hour, because amazingly, everyone slowed down and behaved reasonably), and by the time I got to Portland, it was a lovely semi-clear evening.
But it’s obviously been raining here too, as my remaining squash blossoms are on the deck, and the few proto-squashes that had gotten started are wilty and dead-looking.*
Anyway! It’s nice to be home, though already I miss my dear constant companion of the last week and a half. But there’s not much time to wallow in sorrow, for I must make ready to fly to Italy on Wednesday. I’ve got a list, I’m checking things off…not very much so far, but that’s what the next two days are for. And it will be done! And even if not, I’ll be leaving, and that’s that. 🙂

*It was a pretty disappointing season for zucchini, I have to say. The few that ripened were quite delicious; but mostly, they started; it wasn’t sunny enough; they died. Lather rinse repeat.
