I bet you think I finished the rewrite of Our Lady of the Islands weeks ago and just forgot to tell you.
Um, no.
But it’s really really close! I know I’ve said that before. Oh but it’s REALLY really close now. Two more scenes to go–and one of them is quite short.
Trouble is, both Mark and I have run out of time and had to start focusing on other things for a little while, like his mother’s visit starting today, and this little gathering we’re having to inaugurate the new deck tomorrow…
Which has meant, for my part, lots of time in the garden, getting stuff ready. Including! I rehabilitated a little mostly-dark and punky-looking spot beneath the ancient lilacs, right off the edge of the deck. (The dark round shape at the lower left edge is part of the base of the giant deck-umbrella.)
Portland is very big on the “just leave it on the sidewalk and someone will come by and take it” mindset. We’ve contributed to that cause in the past, and we’ve also been the beneficiaries. Several times last year people left stashes of PERFECTLY GOOD POTS on the sidewalk, and we’ve been hoarding them. For just this reason! As it turned out.
The seashell, however, was Mark’s.
And Mark, for his part, put shelves in the greenhouse:
So we can actually plant things in there, rather than just storing junk!
His old desk from his apartment makes a great potting surface, or maybe even a place to go proofread on a sunny day:
And on the other side, a big low shelf makes a perfect window-seat:
Why yes, I did put a Persian carpet in my greenhouse. Wouldn’t you?
