Oh Hai

What a busy weekend!

So first of all we had a SECOND THUNDERSTORM, even more gigantic than the first one (or maybe it just seemed so because we were out driving during it).

“We”? Oh yes, because Mark came to town Saturday, so we could go see our good friend Will play a fabulous concert at the Alberta St. Pub. And of course we had to have dinner beforehand, so we drove directly into the heart of the storm (as it turned out) and had dinner at Grain and Gristle. (And we tried very hard to get ice cream at Salt and Straw, just to continue the lovely duality of the evening, but the line was out the door, and see above re SECOND THUNDERSTORM). (I mean we even parked and everything, but…)

Actually what really happened was that it was getting late, and Will‘s show was supposed to start at 9:30, so being the good elderly people that we are, we figured we should get there by 9:30. Which was very fortuitous! Because we got there in time to visit with Will’s lovely wife, and to see the opening act, You Are Plural, who were so compelling and fabulous that we bought both of their CDs, which we are enjoying today.

Anyway! Will‘s set finally started, and it was just beyond fabulous. He even dedicated a song to us, “Love in My Heart” (I hope that’s the title!), which was so romantic and sweet. 🙂

Needless to say we got in kind of late that night.

Which meant we got up kind of late the next morning, and got a kind of late start on our hike with Thirdworld and his delightful friend T. But that was okay because they didn’t want to get up early either. We drove down south of Salem and hiked the Opal Creek trail. Gorgeous!

We spent a long time trying to decide the exact color of the water. Emerald? Turquoise? We landed on Jade.

It was about seven miles, and included a cool old mining town with picturesquely abandoned automobiles and mining equipment.

Thirdworld and T. On Top of The World!

And, of course, after the hike came the customary reward.

Dessert at Pix, after dinner at Lauro

Today, we got out of bed bright and early at 11:30 (giving the lie to that whole “sleep till 11” Portlandia thing–11, bah! amateurs!) (and entirely missing a phone call from my parents at 8:30) and, after breakfast (at noon) made it out to the Portland Nursery, along with the entire rest of the population of Portland who hadn’t left town for the weekend. Where we bought things for the shady bed (some brunnera, some dicentra, some polemonium, a few other things that aren’t spelled out on this-here receipt), then came home and planted same. I tried to get a good picture of it, but–well, you know, shady bed.

But here, there were some things for sun too:

The purple things, and the fern in the shell (that’s a shady spot, more or less, I hope), those are new. The calendulas have come back from last year, from the seeds that Shelly Rae gave me.

Aren’t yellow calla lilies the most gorgeous things ever?

Then, lots of weeding and pruning, and discussions of The Future Of The Garden, and suddenly it was dinnertime and we were quite exhausted. So we cooked a simple dinner in, and then I insisted on blogging, because, well really; and now here we are, and I understand it’s dessert time.
