I finally got smart and went out to do yard work earlier in the day, before it got so beastly hot; my usual rhythm has been to garden in the late afternoon, but that hasn’t been working so well lately, so gardening hasn’t been getting done (besides watering).
So today I made up for all that neglect, or at least made a good start: I spent a lot of time in the side bed, where there are ancient rose bushes that have gotten entirely tangled up in weeds and Shasta daisies and all manner of other things. I cleared the area nicely, though the rose bushes also scratched up my arms rather thoroughly. But I don’t hold it against them. As I remarked on Facebook, roses don’t understand when you’re trying to help them.
Then I pruned an unruly leggy shrub in the front bed–I’m probably going to take the shrub out altogether, but pruning it at least helps me see where the bottom of it is, and gives everything around it some light.
And I spent most of the rest of the day working on Hobgoblin. I was planning to start in on chapter 14, which needs to be deleted entirely and replaced by a chapter from the POV of a different character; but no sooner had I started that when I realized that chapters 15 and 17 need to be combined, and the resulting chapter needs to go *before* chapter 14. So I grabbed up all those pieces and have been working through them. I’m nearly finished with (what used to be) chapter 15; but something complicated needs to happen in this last half-page, and my brain just said ‘goodnight’, so I will adjourn and take this up tomorrow. Or perhaps Monday, as H. and I are hiking tomorrow. It’s supposed to be not quite so hot. That’ll make a nice change.
