Some Wind

A storm blew through London last night–and quite a storm it was! It had been a windy day, as noted, but then in the night, despite our very effective earplugs, we were awakened by–well, it sounded like someone was beating on our windows with sticks. Hard, and with a vengeance.

Our flat is on the fourth floor (American fifth floor) of a nice old building, and just outside the window is a giant old elm tree, just a bit taller than the building. We’ve enjoyed the gentle sound of the leaves against the windows in the breeze…then last night the storm whipped the branches around something fierce, whacking the tree against the building every which way. We watched for a few minutes but it was kind of scary. So we crawled back into bed and hoped for the best. Eventually went back to sleep, then awakened again a few times…

This morning the neighborhood looked rather bedraggled, and our favorite pub was still mopping up and not serving breakfast, and some businesses were closed. We spent most of the day at the V&A museum and some of their exhibits were closed too, because of the storm. But there was plenty to see anyway–what an astonishing museum! I rested my feet after a while, sitting down with a book in one of the silver rooms while Mark ran around trying to see everything. 🙂

The Circle tube line was impacted by the storm pretty much all day, and others too I’m sure. Now it’s all over–just chilly and drizzly out there. But, very impressive! I hope Brighton is still there–we hear the coast got hit pretty hard as well. We will see on Thursday!
